Studying English is challenging, and for many learners, undiagnosed learning disabilities can present a serious threat to their success. Recent studies indicate that up to 10% of the world population has a non-apparent disability, such as autism or dyslexia. International students are no exception, but they rarely have official documentation allowing instructors to provide accommodations. At the same time, few ESL instructors have training in learning disabilities, and they are often unsure of how to support learners who seem to have extra challenges.

In this interactive workshop, disabilities that affect language learning and how ESOL contexts present specific challenges for students with disabilities will be shared. The majority of the workshop will focus on strategies for struggling students in the following areas:

• General strategies: Universal-Design-for-Learning principles and strategy highlights
• Common accommodations for non-apparent disabilities
• Executive functions: Strategies for organization and attention issues
• Writing & reading tips
